The Beagle Club of NSW Inc was founded in 1962,
with the inaugural meeting being held at the East Balmain home of
Dot and 'Snow' Stopford (Russford Kennels). The Stopfords were the
organisers and driving force behind the formation of the Club and
monthly meetings were held at their home for the first year of its
existence. Also present at that first meeting were well known
canine identities Harry Spira, Harry and Len de Groen, Ian Doherty
(Martinique), Dan and Vicki Scott (Scottholme), Tom and Neil
Longmuir (Belview) and George White (Oatendale). Foundation
Officers were 'Snow' Stopford (President), Tom Longmuir (Vice
President) and John Smythe (Secretary).
Since those early days of its
formation the club meetings have been held in a variety of halls
at locations including Glebe, Annandale, Granville, Concord and
now in the Secretary's Rooms at Castle Hill Showground on the
2nd Tuesday of every month (except January) at 7.30 p.m.
The Club conducts two
Championship Shows each year at Easter, one on the Saturday and
the other on the Sunday. The first Championship Show
conducted by the Club was held on 14th November 1965. Best in Show
went to Aust. Ch. Lees Pennon (Imp. U.K.) (A.O.M.*). Pennon went on to win three
times, a feat which was eventually equalled and then surpassed by
Aust. Ch Bayhound So Sassy (A.O.M.*) who won four Bests in Show. A full list
of Best in Show winners can be seen in the
Showing section of this
site.
