Sniffing Around Sydney Walks

Platypus Track, Bidjigal Reserve, The Hills Shire Council

Report 29 November 2009

We had a small group for our last walk of the year, 13 people and 6 beagles. This might have been because of the weather (the day was very dusty) or perhaps because this was a harder walk than most.

The Platypus Track, Bidjigal Reserve, was along a rough bush track with a few steep sections requiring a reasonable level of fitness. It's good to note that everyone, humans and beagles, did pretty well, sticking together as a group with just the occasional stop for rest and water. Perhaps we'll do a few more harder walks in the future.

We started off down a steep path, then crossed over a few bridges and weirs. The weirs were interesting because each beagle took a different approach to getting over the raised concrete blocks - some clambered over them, some walked next to them, some kind of weaved around them. It was fun watching our adventurous hounds find their trail.

Of course, there were lots of smells and things to try and dig up. We had to be a little careful because a fox baiting program had been held a few months previously. Fortunately, none of our beagles found anything to eat.

The walk was along one track, around the Platypus Track loop (we stopped part-way through the loop for a well-earned rest), then back along the original track. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and the beagles were nicely tired out at the end.

I hope everyone enjoyed our walks this year. Keep an eye on the club's website for some more exciting adventures.
