Duck River Walk, Auburn Council

Report 28 September 2003

A small group of about 15 people and 10 beagles gathered for our walk along Duck River. We we were very fortunate to have such a sunny and calm day for this walk because the days before and after were very cold and windy.

This walk had a bit of everything. We started off by walking across an oval to a concrete path alongside the river. Surprisingly, there weren't many other walkers or cyclists, compared to some other walks, but there were lots of groups having picnics. This was fortunate because at one point we were warned to watch out for a black snake lurking in the grass.

At the end of the path, we crossed a road to the front of a private golf course. Dogs weren't allowed in the golf course so we followed some footpaths to circle around to the back of the course. This was an exciting time for the beagles because they found lots of discarded food, mainly bread. There was plenty of sniffing and pulling. At the back of the course, we met up with another concrete path, which we followed to the half-way point of the walk where we were to cross to the opposite side of the Duck River.

The intended crossing was a narrow breakwater, which looked a little tricky, and so we had a short discussion about whether it was possible to cross here, whether there was an alternative crossing, and whether we should perhaps return the way we had come. Fortunately, everyone in our group had an adventurous spirit and all humans and beagles managed to cross over the river very easily in the end.

On this side of the river, we walked over another playing field to meet up with some bush tracks. We followed these (dodging some broken glass) back to the road near the front of the golf course where we crossed the road again, back to the original concrete path. We slowly walked along the path back to our starting point, where everyone had a well-earned drink, snack, and rest.
