This page is maintained by The Beagle Club of NSW Inc., Australia, Social Co-ordinator (see the Committee page for the name of the current Social Co-ordinator). It provides information about current, past, and future Sniffing Around Sydney Walks. These are fun outings around Sydney for club members and their beagles. If you would like to lead or attend a walk, please read:
All walk durations, distances, and levels of difficulty are estimates. Many walks are suggested by club members (often these are walks in the member's local area). If you would like to suggest a walk, please read the tips for finding and planning walks, which will tell you some of the things to look for in a good walk. If you know of a good walk, please share it with other club members. For added interest, some walks include waypoints to geocaches recorded at the official global GPS cache hunt site (you'll need a GPS unit to find these). Many thanks to everyone who has contributed reports and/or photographs. |

If you would like to attend a walk with The Beagle Club of NSW, please note these requirements (some are determined by the Companion Animals Act 1998):
| Morning Walk | Afternoon Walk | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
By 8:00am | By 10:30am |
If it's raining hard or intermittently or an extremely hot day or an extremely windy day, a decision will be made whether to cancel the walk by this time.
Please phone the Walks Coordinator and check if the walk is on or cancelled if you're uncertain. If a walk is cancelled, the Walks Coordinator may not necessarily travel to the walk to let people know who also travel to the walk. To avoid inconvenience and disappointment, it's much better to call rather than drive to the walk and find out that no-one is there. Apologies in advance if a walk is cancelled and then the weather is fine. The Walks Coordinator has to make a decision based on the weather forecast and what the actual weather is a few hours before the walk, which can be tricky. Please phone if uncertain. Please see the Committee page for the number of the current Walks Coordinator. |
| Morning Walk | Afternoon Walk | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Before the walk | If it's fine weather, there's no need to phone the Walks Coordinator to check whether a walk is on. Just turn up. There's no need to let the Walks Coordinator know you're coming (but please check if you're uncertain). | |
| 10:00am | 1:00pm | Everyone starts turning up. Newcomers become members on the spot by giving the Walks Coordinator their membership form and payment. |
| 10:05am | 1:05pm | People meet and greet. Beagles meet, greet, and sniff. The Walks Coordinator mingles, welcoming everyone, asking everyone to sign the attendance book. Be careful as your beagles get to know each other. Keep them on lead. Some may growl and snap if they feel uneasy with so many dogs - typically they settle down pretty quickly. |
| 10:10am | 1:10pm | The Walks Coordinator calls everyone together, takes a group photo, describes the walk, reminds everyone to keep beagles on-lead, suggests that everyone keep their plastic bags handy, etc. |
| 10:15am | 1:15pm | We set off, beagles sniffing, people chatting. It's a lovely day. Lots of photo opportunities. |
| 10:30am | 1:30pm | We stop and wait for slower walkers to catch up. While waiting, we give our thirsty beagles a drink of water and take a few photos. We set off again. This pattern continues during the walk. |
| 11:15am | 2:15pm | We stop at some shops to rest for 20 minutes. Toilets are available. People buy food and drink (or have their own). Beagles think they're starving and desperately beg for food. People can't resist. |
| 12:00pm | 3:00pm | We are close to the end of the walk. Beagles are exhausted. |
| 12:15pm | 3:15pm | We arrive back at the start. The Walks Coordinator thanks everyone for coming. Everyone says goodbye. |
| 12:20pm | 3:20pm | People drive home. Beagles collapse in the car, tired and happy. |
All walks are checked out by the Walks Coordinator (and usually his beagles) before it becomes a club event and is assigned a level of difficulty. However, for safety reasons, please follow this standard advice:
All walks have an indication of their level of difficulty. It's useful to know what these levels mean so you can judge whether a certain walk is suitable for you, your family members (especially young children), and your beagles.
Please note that:
An easy walk means:
A medium walk means:
A hard walk means:
Finding walks in Sydney and surrounds that are suitable for both humans and dogs takes time and research.
